MEDFORD, Ore. – A local boy and girl are gearing up for a big boxing match down in Redding, California. It’s a unique fight night event that will benefit youth programs.
The two boxers train at Superior Boxing in Medford. 14-year-old Victor Vargas said,
“Come every day, and like try your best every day. Push yourself. Every day I want to be better.” Boxing is unlike any other sport, where two people go head-to-head in a ring and is a true test of technique, skill and heart.
“I thought I wasn’t going to get very far but now I am, yeah. It’s a really fun sport,” said 10-year-old boxer Delaney Womack.
The two youth athletes looking to put that all on display in Redding next month. Vargas said,
“I just love the discipline and I just love fighting.”
Vargas is entering his 11th amateur fight. He has ambitious goals of becoming a professional one day. He’s put in four years of training, and he said he has no plans of stopping, “In every single fight I try to push myself more and more.”
For Womack, she’s entering into her first fight, and she said people tend to be surprised to hear she boxes, but to her, it’s a sport anyone can try, “Sometimes people are like, ‘you box?’ and stuff. None of my friends box, no. Just try a new sport, try new things.”

While boxing is a full contact sport, the coaches said it’s not all about the fighting, it’s about what they learn outside of the ring. Superior Boxing Coach Jose Luis Montufar said,
“It’s more respect, respect and discipline. And respect everyone. That’s the more important thing.”
Montufar said boxing offers a great path of enrichment for kids, “I like for the kids to just stay away from the trouble, stay away from playing on the internet.” His two students will be competing on the Raising Shasta’s Roaring Rumble card on April 4th. In addition to youth fights, it’s a local celebrity boxing event too, featuring folks like their local fire department, law enforcement, business owners and more to face off to raise money for their youth programs.
Montufar said it’ll be a great show and he’s proud of the work his students have put in, “I feel really good. We try to just prepare, condition. I know we feel like we’re going to be the winners. That’s it.”
