OAKLAND — A 59-year-old pedestrian was in critical condition Thursday after he suffered major head and other injuries when he was struck by a car that did not stop Wednesday evening near the Uptown district, authorities said.

The collision happened around 5:58 p.m. Wednesday in the 400 block of 23rd Street.

According to initial police reports, the man, a Concord resident, was crossing the street when he was struck by a car that was westbound on 23rd.

The car, described as a silver Hyundai Elantra, continued on without stopping and was last seen northbound on Valley Street, authorities said. A detailed description of the driver was not released.

The man suffered a fractured skull, a broken leg and other injuries and was transported to a hospital, authorities said. Police have not been able to interview him.
