David W. Hanson was designated as interim general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power by Thursday, following the resignation of Janisse Quiñones.

Hanson has been the department’s chief operating officer and senior assistant general manager since August 2024. He has worked for the department for more than 20 years.

Mayor Karen Bass, who announced the designation, described Hanson as “someone who has dedicated his career to public service.”

“I know Dave will be a strong partner in working to build a more resilient power grid, accelerating the transition to 100% clean energy, and cementing L.A.’s position as a global climate leader,” Bass said.

Quiñones’ resignation as the LADWP’s chief executive officer and chief engineer becomes effective Friday. She will begin work as the chief executive officer of LUMA, the transmission and distribution operator of the electric grid in her native Puerto Rico, on Monday.

The Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to appoint Hanson as interim general manager.

A nationwide search is being conducted to find Quiñones’ permanent replacement.
