FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — For the first time in the history of Valley Children’s Stadium, a building that opened in 1980, Fresno State failed to score a single point. The Bulldogs were shutout 23-0 to San Diego State (6-1) in a rivalry game that saw the Oil Can Trophy stay with the team down South.

Matt Entz made a change a quarterback starting Carson Conklin, a sophomore transfer from Sacramento State, over senior EJ Warner who had been the starter all season. “We talk about ‘the ball is the team,’ Entz said postgame. “And we weren’t living that. We turned the ball over too many times, too often.”

Through 6 games, Warner threw 9 interceptions (2nd most in FBS) but the turnover valve stayed on with Conklin. He was picked off twice including a 31-yard pick six in the fourth quarter that made it 23-0.

He finished the day 20/42 passing for 182 yards and appears to be QB1 going forward. “I’m good with my decision. I slept better at the end of the week than I had the previous ten days,” Entz said.

Bryson Donelson + Rayson Luke were the leading rushers for FS accounting for just 23 yards each. “We’ve gotta be great at simple, and we’re not. When I say simple, I’m referring to blocking, communicating, catching the football, runs after contact – those things,” Entz said. “We’re not where we need to be right now.”

FS falls to 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in Mountain West play. The team travels to play Boise State (6-2, 4-0) next Saturday with kickoff on the blue turf set for 12:30 PM on November 1st.

Tedford inducted into Ring of Honor

At halftime Jeff Tedford was inducted into the Ring of Honor becoming the first player and coach to join the exclusive club in the history of the school.

A number of former players, coaches & teammates of Tedford’s were on hand to celebrate his induction including David & Derek Carr, Kevin Sweeney, Lorenzo Neal, Henry Ellard, Trent Dilfer and Pat Hill.

“Obviously, missing Coach Sweeney because he was the foundation of this whole thing,” Tedford said. “It’s just such an honor to be included with those guys I never thought that would happen.”

As a quarterback, Tedford played in the first game in the history of Bulldog Stadium and led the ‘Dogs to a win in the 1982 California Bowl over Bowling Green.

As a coach, Tedford posted an overall record of 45-22 overall including 4 bowl wins, three 10win seasons, three West Division titles and two Mountain West championships in 2018 + 2022.

“It’s a lot of hard work but a lot of people involved in it from teammates way back in ’81 + ’82 to all the players when I was an assistant coach and a head coach,” Tedford said. “Every single person is under that name so I’m fortunate that my name is up there but it’s a total team effort.”-
