Re “Balboa Park must have sustainable funding” (March 24): Katy J. McDonald is absolutely right. As the cultural heart of our region, Balboa Park and its museums, gardens and public spaces serve millions each year. Yet decades of deferred maintenance and underinvestment now threaten both the visitor experience and the institutions that call the park home.
This issue extends beyond Balboa Park. It reflects a broader challenge in how San Diego funds essential civic assets — including parks, libraries, and arts and culture — which are vital to our economy and quality of life.
To meet this moment, city and regional leaders should establish a blue-ribbon committee to develop clear, actionable strategies for long-term sustainability. With the right vision and public support, we can secure the future of Balboa Park and strengthen the cultural infrastructure that serves communities across San Diego.
