The San Diego River Dog Beach in Ocean Beach is expected to open Friday after water quality samples met state health standards.

This comes after the beach was closed after a large volume of sewage was released earlier in the week.

A valve failure was reported around 5 a.m. Wednesday at a nearby pump station and released about 18-thousand gallons of sewage, about half of that reached the San Diego River.

Authorities closed the entrance channel of Mission Bay and also westbound traffic on Friars Road for work crews to fix the valve and clean up the spill. Environmental clean-up requires shoveling contaminated soil and treating with agricultural lime to sanitize and neutralize odors.

Be advised that the county DEHQ has issued an advisory for Tidelands Park, North Cove Vacation Isle, Campland, De Anza Cove, La Jolla Cove, Avenida de la Playa, San Luis Rey River and La Jolla Children’s Pool due to elevated levels of bacteria.
