OAKLAND — A woman and a man were both wounded multiple times early Tuesday when gunmen opened fire on their vehicle as they drove in East Oakland, authorities said.

The 27-year-old woman and the 33-year-old man were in stable condition. They are both Oakland residents but police have not yet specified their relationship.

The shooting, which caused the activation of a gunshot detection alert system, happened about 12:59 a.m. Tuesday in the 6900 block of Weld Street, a mostly residential area.

According to initial police reports, the woman and man were in a vehicle driving when at least two and possibly more men began shooting at them. It was not immediately clear if the shooters were standing outside or were in a parked vehicle.

The targeted vehicle crashed.

The woman, who was a passenger, was wounded at least three times. The man, who was driving, was hit at least twice.

The shooters fled in a vehicle, possibly a white sedan, authorities said.

A motive for the shooting is under investigation.

Detailed descriptions of the shooters were not released.
