OBITUARY

John was born in Altadena, moved to Ramona where he grew up, and eventually became a “Newsman” for nearly 40 years. After graduating from San Diego State University, he worked for Copley Press covering city and county government for local Los Angeles newspapers. From there, he joined the staff at the San Diego Evening Tribune covering labor, travel, education, local government, weather disaster, and eventually held various editor positions. His passionate work paid dividends as John earned the California Teacher Association’s John Swett Award for outstanding, continuous coverage of education as well as the James S. Copley Ring of Truth Award. Most notably, he and the staff of the Evening Tribune were awarded the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of the 1978 PSA plane crash. He finished his career with the Port of San Diego in the communications department. Above all, John’s true pride and joy was his family and love for Jesus. John was preceded by his wife, Marilyn, survived by his two children Stacy and Jeffrey, four grandchildren, Taylor, Christian, Madison and Cameron, and three great grandchildren, Brooks, Nora and Cooper.
