Seventy-five people were arrested after Saturday’s “No Kings” protest in downtown Los Angeles when tensions escalated near the Metropolitan Detention Center, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Per LAPD Media Relations, 66 adults and eight juveniles were arrested for failing to disperse after officers declared an unlawful assembly. One adult was also arrested for possession of a dirk or dagger.

As of Sunday afternoon, no further details were immediately available.

The arrests came after a largely peaceful daytime march drew thousands of demonstrators to downtown Los Angeles as part of nationwide protests denouncing President Donald Trump.

By early evening, the Department of Homeland Security said clashes broke out between some protesters and law enforcement near the Metropolitan Detention Center and the Roybal Federal Building.

Authorities said people threw objects including rocks, bottles and chunks of concrete at officers. DHS also said two federal officers were struck by cement blocks and required medical treatment.

Officers formed skirmish lines and used crowd-control tactics including pepper balls, bean bag rounds and mounted units as they ordered demonstrators to disperse.

Video from the scene showed several people detained with handcuffs or zip ties as officers moved in to clear the area.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said she was monitoring the situation as conditions changed throughout the day.

“It started out peaceful but I’m hearing things are changing,” Bass said Saturday. “It’s important that we always have peaceful protest.”

Organizers of the “No Kings” demonstrations expected large turnouts across the region, including events in Beverly Hills, Burbank, West Covina, West Hollywood and Thousand Oaks.

The downtown Los Angeles march began earlier in the day with crowds gathering near Grand Park and City Hall, where protesters carried signs and flags as they voiced opposition to federal immigration enforcement and the Trump administration.

Authorities have not released additional information about the individuals arrested or potential additional charges.
