Sacramento County wildfire sparks air quality advisory in Contra Costa

The Bay Area Air District on Sunday issued an air quality advisory for parts of Contra Costa County due to wildfire smoke out of Sacramento County.

The Marina Fire is burning in the Lower Sherman Island Wildlife Area, north of Antioch. The Air District issued the advisory for Sunday through Monday.

Wind is expected to send smoke from the fire in the direction of Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley, Discovery Bay and Byron. Smoky, hazy skies may be visible, and the smell of smoke is possible.

Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter and other harmful pollutants. Exposure to wildfire smoke is unhealthy, even for short periods of time, the Air District said.

If possible, stay inside with windows and doors closed until smoke levels subside. Residents can also reduce their exposure to smoke by setting their car vent systems to recirculate to prevent outside air from moving inside.

The Air District will be monitoring air quality throughout the region for smoke impacts. Pollutant levels are not expected to exceed the national 24-hour health standard and therefore, no Spare the Air Alert is in effect.
