Plant harmful to dogs emerges on La Jolla Bike Path

A plant known to be potentially harmful to dogs has begun sprouting along the La Jolla Bike Path, with volunteers urging people who walk their dogs there to stay on the paved areas and be cautious.

The grassy plant, known as foxtail, is prolific at this time of year, volunteers told the La Jolla Parks & Beaches board during its March 23 meeting. Foxtails are considered dangerous to pets because they are barbed and can penetrate a dog’s skin, ears, nose, eyes and paws and do not fall out on their own. They also can cause internal infections or damage.

Those who use the path with their dogs are encouraged to contact a veterinarian if a foxtail barb is found.
