HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — Second lady Usha Vance said Friday she has disagreed with her husband over the course of his political career.

Vance, a former Democrat, explained during an interview with NBC News’s Kate Snow that she and the vice president have different backgrounds but try to learn from each other.

“We have different starting points for thinking about all sorts of questions,” the second lady said. “But one of the benefits of being in a marriage, as opposed to, you know, being – I’m not his staffer, I’m not involved in this in any professional sense – is that there’s no expectation that we are going to see eye to eye on everything.”

Rather, Vance noted, she and her husband expect to have disagreements through which they can understand each other more.

“The expectation is that we are going to be open-minded and have conversation and that I’ll provide meaningful input from, you know, the perspective of someone who loves him and wants him to succeed,” Vance said. “So, even if we don’t agree, I think it’s always very productive.”

The second lady was part of the Democratic Party until at least 2014, when she married JD Vance, a Republican. Formerly a critic of President Donald Trump, JD Vance has become a leading figure of the MAGA movement that has vilified Democrats and changed political dynamics over the past decade.

Usha Vance told Snow that she and her husband work together in a more personal way, since the second lady isn’t one of the vice president’s professional advisors.

“I’m not the vice president, I’m not in his office, but he’s right across the street right now, and he’s in an office right down the hall. And a lot of what we do is spend time together even if we’re working on separate things,” Usha said.

She and JD have been asked multiple times over the past year whether they may seek the White House in 2028. Neither has given a true indication of their intentions, although the vice president is considered by many to be a potential frontrunner in the Republican primary election that year.

Usha Vance said during her interview that her husband is more focused on November’s midterm races than succeeding President Donald Trump – comments similar to JD’s on the subject.

“I understand that that is the question that people are asking him, that he has to think about and so on. So of course I’m there for him if he wants to talk about something like that,” the second lady said. “But this is – we’re, what, like less than a year and a half into this term?”

JD told Fox News last November that he would talk with Trump about running for president after the midterms.

“Whenever I think about that, I try to put it out of my head and remind myself the American people elected me to do a job right now, and my job is to do it,” the vice president said of a White House campaign. “And if you start getting distracted and focus on what comes next, I think it actually makes you worse at the job that you have.”
