An erratic driver who refused to stop for officers and ran a red light caused a multi-vehicle crash that left two people dead in Anaheim early Tuesday, police said.
Officers attempted to stop a silver Infiniti near Lincoln Avenue and Anaheim Boulevard around 1 a.m., but the driver refused to pull over and crashed nearby after running the red light, according to the Anaheim Police Department.
“We were not in pursuit. Our officer did not have a chance to activate lights or sirens,” Sgt. Sutter told KTLA’s Erin Myers at the scene. “Was the officer trying to conduct an enforcement stop? Yes. Did we get to the point of a pursuit? No, we did not. This happened very fast, very quickly.”
The Infiniti crashed into three other vehicles as it tried to pass through the intersection, killing one person in a red sedan and a passenger inside the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect and two possible teenage girls in the back seat of the Infiniti were critically injured in the crash.

One person in a blue sedan and another in a white Cadillac Escalade suffered what were described as minor injuries.
The identity of the suspect has not been released. It was also unclear why the driver fled or if they were impaired in any way.
“I did want to let our community know that this intersection will be closed for most of the morning, especially the commuting hours,” Sgt. Sutter said.
No officers were injured in the incident.
