LONG BEACH — With Millikan’s softball team holding a one-run lead against Long Beach Poly on Tuesday, Rams coach Michelle Lehr spoke to Peyton Dobrovolny before she stepped to the plate in the sixth inning.
Dobrovolny had been walked and popped a fly ball to right field in her first two at-bats for Millikan.
“My last two at-bats I was kind of lagging on the ball a little bit,” Dobrovolny said. “(Coach Lehr) just told me, ‘get on time, don’t load so much and turn your shoulder to the pitcher.’ ”
The adjustments worked, as the first baseman hit the ball directly into right-center field to knock in two runs and Millikan came away with a 4-1 win in the Moore League game.
“The adjustment was there. It wasn’t barreled, I mean this girl can smoke balls,” Lehr said. “She can hit for power, but it was just enough to land in no man’s zone, which was perfect.”
The game was a pitching duel from the start, and both pitchers went the full seven innings.
It was a bumpy start for Millikan’s Riley McAndrew, who walked the first two batters and allowed a first-inning run. But she finished the game with eight strikeouts and didn’t allow another run.
Long Beach Poly starting pitcher Tegan Breaux struck out five.
“Tegan is a workhorse, she’s always going to get it done,” Poly head coach Elizabeth Sanches said. “What we love the most about Tegan is that she doesn’t let the circumstances of the game get to her.”
Long Beach Poly’s Persjalinah Lam Sam gave her team a 1-0 lead in the first inning as she scored on an error by Millikan.
The Rams responded with two runs in the third inning. Mia Meza and Lauryn Kim each scored to make it 2-1.
The second run scored on a double by Addy Everett, whose hit hopped over the outfield fence. Everett also hit a double in the sixth.
“Addy came in super clutch today, two doubles,” Lehr said. “That was a huge factor on our runs. We played some really good small ball.”
McAndrew allowed two hits in the last three innings.
“We didn’t bring our bats today, we didn’t make the adjustments,” Sanches said. “Hats off to their pitcher. She was really hitting her spots.”
With the win, the Rams (14-4 overall) sit on top of the Moore League standings at 5-0, while Poly (8-2) is in second at 5-1.
“I think now that we got that first round out of the way, we beat Wilson, Poly and Lakewood. I think we are set,” Dobrovolny said. “We are just in that grind mode. We’re going to do great, keep pushing through, and eventually win it all.”
