Thursday is National Burrito Day, where restaurants around the country will be celebrating the hearty tortilla-wrapped hand-held meal from Northern Mexico.

But one San Diego restaurant and the San Diego Tourism Authority are taking the celebration a step further on Thursday.

Because the popular California burrito — which includes French fries as a central component — originated in San Diego County, Moxy San Diego hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter will rename the California Burrito served in its lobby bar the “San Diego burrito” for one day.

According to a 2025 article in San Diego Magazine, the California Burrito was born in the 1980s at Lolita’s Mexican Foods in Bonita. According to José Robledo of the Roberto’s taqueria chain, his nephew worked at Lolita’s and got the idea after seeing a customer arriving at the shop with his own fries to roll into a Lolita’s carne asada burrito. Santana’s Mexican Grill in San Diego also claims to be the home of the California burrito.

Whatever the source, San Diego Tourism Authority President and CEO Daniel Kuperschmid said he wants to celebrate San Diego’s place in burrito history on Thursday. “National Burrito Day is our moment to remind the world where this iconic dish comes from. While many will debate what goes in a burrito, San Diego has known the answer for decades — carne asada, fries, and a whole lot of hometown pride.”

Here are some of the burrito specials that local diners can check out Thursday:
