NORTHEAST FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — One of the most celebrated festivals across India was brought to Northeast Fresno.

A Diwali Celebration was held along Maple and Nees Avenues.

The community event is part of the Hindu Festival of Lights.

Official celebrations began Monday for more than one billion people, including Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs.

Organizers say Diwali holds religious significance.

”The importance of Diwali is for us to self-reflect and to rid ourselves of the negativity, choose positivity, choose hope, choose goodness and this is that time of year where all families come together to celebrate those important virtues & live harmoniously and to enjoy the spirit of Diwali,” says Zeal Shah, an outreach administrator for the event.

Diwali is typically celebrated between the middle of October or the middle of November.
