OAKLAND — Police are seeking suspects in multiple robberies and other crimes who shot at some officers when they tried to stop their vehicle Wednesday morning in West Oakland, authorities said.
The officers were not hurt and did not return fire, authorities said.
Police said the suspects are linked to dozens of armed robberies and burglaries recently in Oakland and surrounding cities, including a robbery earlier in the day in East Oakland.
Officers spotted a car the suspects had been using about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday in the area of 18th and Market streets and tried to stop it.
The vehicle continued driving, with officers in pursuit. A few blocks away, on the 700 block of 21st Street, at least one occupant of the suspects’ vehicle fired shots at the officers, authorities said.
The vehicle kept going. Because of public safety concerns, officers did not pursue it any further, Interim Chief of Police James Beere said at a news briefing Wednesday afternoon
Streets in the area were shut down for a few hours while police looked for the suspects and evidence related to the shooting.
Beere said police have developed “several strong leads” that should help police identify the suspects and that Oakland police would be working with other agencies to find and arrest them.
Anyone with information about the suspects may call investigators at 510-238-3326. Anyone with video or other images that might assist in the investigation may email them to cidvideo@oaklandca.gov.
