Thousands of people in California have warned to “keep windows and doors closed” as air pollution reaches “harmful” levels.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said in an air quality alert that parts of the Coachella Valley and Imperial County would be impacted by the pollution from Wednesday evening until Thursday night.
The NWS warned that particle pollution can get deep into people’s lungs, causing serious health problems including asthma attacks, heart and lung disease symptoms, and increased risk of lung infections.
“Everyone can be affected, but sensitive groups such as people with lung or heart disease, older adults, people who are pregnant, children, and those who spend a lot of time outdoors are at greater risk,” it said.
People in impacted areas should take steps to minimize their exposure to pollution by limiting the length and intensity of outdoor activities, slowing down when driving on dirt tracks, and reducing the number of trips made with vehicles, the NWS said.

This is a developing story. More to follow.
