OAKLAND — Police here have arrested one suspect in a bizarre incident where two men were attacked with broken bottles by six assailants dressed in clothing affiliated with a painting company.
Jose Gutierrez-Arguello, 35, was charged with two counts of mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly joining the attack where both victims suffered “major injuries and disfigurement to their face and body,” police said in court filings. Gutierrez-Arguello was released from jail after posting $200,000 bail and was ordered to stay away from both victims.
He has not yet entered a plea, court records show.
Gutierrez-Arguello was identified as a suspect and arrested in March, but the attack happened last November. Police say the six suspects were similarly dressed in clothing that read “Level Five Painting” and fled in a truck with the same words and logo.
Police haven’t revealed the suspected motive for the attack other than saying it appeared targeted and deliberate. One of the men identified Gutierrez-Arguello as the person who slashed his face and back with a bottle while four other attackers held him down, according to court records.
The men were attacked around 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 8, 2025, outside a bar on the 3200 bock of International Boulevard, police said.
Gutierrez-Arguello was pulled over with his wife driving the same pickup truck on March 6, before the victim identified him, police said. In an interview, police say he “placed himself on scene and admits (sic) to having a verbal altercation” but denied things ever got physical.
