(FOX40.COM) — A condemned inmate died Thursday morning at California State Prison, Sacramento, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
CDCR officials said in a press release that Armando Macias, 50, was found unresponsive in his cell around 7 a.m. Staff began life-saving measures and called for emergency medical assistance.

Authorities stated that paramedics pronounced him dead at 8:01 a.m.
Macias had been on death row since September 2011 after being received from Orange County following a first-degree murder conviction, officials said.
The prison’s Investigative Services Unit is reviewing the circumstances surrounding his death. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.
There are currently 578 people on California’s death row, according to the CDCR.
