Smoke billowed over San Francisco International Airport on Friday afternoon after a fire broke out at a cargo facility near a runway, briefly disrupting airport transit service but leaving flight operations unaffected, officials said.
The fire, which involved multiple storage containers, sent thick black plumes into the sky, visible from across the airport and nearby areas.
The San Francisco Fire Department said the blaze was a one-alarm fire involving five conex storage containers and debris at a cargo site in the 500 block of North McDonnell Road. The fire was contained without spreading to nearby structures, and no injuries were reported.
“Roads have reopened, and the airport remains open,” the department said in an update posted on X. “This fire is under investigation.”
Earlier, officials said roadways near the cargo area were temporarily closed due to heavy smoke, though there was “no threat to the immediate public” and no impact on air operations.
Airport officials adjusted ground transportation as a precaution. Doug Yakel, a spokesperson for SFO, said the AirTrain Blue Line — which connects terminals to the rental car center and long-term parking — was temporarily suspended because its track passes over the affected area.
Emergency crews from San Francisco and San Mateo County responded to the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
