BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Cesar Chavez mural was seen being removed on Friday morning in downtown Bakersfield.

A day prior, the words “Believe survivors” were painted over the mural.

The mural was located near 18th Street and L Street. The mural appeared back in November 2019.

The labor leader, Cesar Chavez, is accused of sexually abusing girls and women during the 1960s and 1970s.

Dolores Huerta, once considered a Chavez ally, also claims Chavez raped her and that she gave birth to two children from those encounters.

In a statement to Eyewitness News, Bakersfield City Councilman Andrae Gonzales said, “The property owner says the mural had been planned to be removed as soon as April 4th.”
