The Camron-Stanford House, a historic Victorian building in Oakland, caught fire early Saturday morning, according to the Oakland Fire Department.

The fire department said they responded to a structure fire involving the Camron-Stanford House located at 14th Street and Lakeside Drive along Lake Merritt just before 12:40 a.m.

There, authorities reported finding flames on the left side and rear exterior of the Victorian building that were extending into the structure. They noted the age of the structure allowed the fire to move from the bottom of the building to the top very rapidly.

Crews were able to get ahead of the fire and open up strategic areas of the walls and interior to prevent further extension to most of the rooms and contain the fire to a condensed area of the structure, the fire department said.

The fire department noted they were able to salvage great majority of the building while preventing significant damage to art, furniture and historic artefacts housed on site.

Authorities confirmed the fire originated in the rear exterior of the building, but the cause remains under investigation.
