The Jimmy Durante Boulevard Pavement Rehabilitation Project in Del Mar began on April 6, which will replace all pavement from Via de la Valle and the San Dieguito River Bridge.
The project spans 340,000 square feet of pavement to be repaired, including pavement and traffic striping improvements.
According to the city, contractor Hazard Construction plans to keep at least one lane open in both directions at all times, but there could be intermittent delays during construction in April and May.
“A revised striping plan is designed to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety,” according to a city of Del Mar announcement. “In particular, planned striping with green paint is designed to make drivers and bicyclists more aware of each other as they share the road.”
The Del Mar City Council previously voted Feb. 17 to award a $1.3 million contract to Hazard Construction for the project. The bidding came in lower than the engineer’s estimate due to what city staff attributed to reduced federal spending that put many projects on hold.
The pavement condition index score along Jimmy Durante Boulevard ranges from 49 to 62, including a rating of “poor” for most of the pavement, according to a council agenda report from the February meeting. The citywide score is 76.
