SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A major highway connector in southern San Diego will be closed to traffic for nighttime construction this week.
Caltrans is warning drivers ahead of the April 6-9 nighttime closure of highway connector SR-54 to I-805 south.
From 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday, SR-54 west to I-805 south will be closed, along with westbound Telegraph Canyon Road from Nacion Avenue to Halecrest Drive.
The planned construction work is part of a $33 million project to improve transportation infrastructure in southern San Diego County, which includes bridge safety improvements, sound walls and auxiliary lanes along a four-mile segment of I-805 from East Palomar Street in Chula Vista to State Route 54 in National City, according to Caltrans.
Caltrans says sound walls along the route and bridge safety improvements at Telegraph Canyon Road and East Naples Street are expected to be completed by late 2026.
SR-54 to I-805 Connector Detour
A detour will be in place for drivers to exit SR-54 at Highland Avenue, turn left onto eastbound SR-54 and use the southbound I-805 connector.

Telegraph Canyon Road Detour
Drivers can avoid the Telegraph Canyon Road closure by using the detour Caltrans will be putting into place during the April 6-9 road closures.
Drivers heading east can turn right on Melrose Avenue, left on Palomar Street, then left on Oleander Avenue to get back onto Telegraph Canyon Road.
Drivers heading west can turn left on Oleander Avenue, right on Palomar Street, then right on Melrose Avenue to get back onto Telegraph Canyon Road.

Nearby residents and businesses can expect noise, lights and dust from the nighttime construction work.
Caltrans is reminding drivers to slow down and move for highway workers and law enforcement.
