Firefighters were battling a brush fire in San Marcos on Sunday afternoon that reportedly was threatening homes.
Cal Fire San Diego officials dispatched two helicopter crews and at least seven engines to assist San Marcos firefighters and others on the blaze, which was reported just after 3 p.m., officials said.
Residents were being evacuated from an area near Cal State San Marcos and on either side of Lake Moree Park shortly before 3:50 p.m., according to a map posted on social media by emergency officials.
Cal Fire dispatched two helicopters, two air tankers, and ground crews with seven engines to the fire, which was reported near Barham Drive and La Moree Road in San Marcos, said Capt. Mike Cornette, a department spokesperson.
The fire was burning in a hilly area along the eastern edge of the campus. It was burning at a medium rate in heavy fuel and had covered about 2 acres as of 3:40 p.m., Cornette said.
The San Marcos Fire Department was leading efforts to control the blaze, Cornette said. According to some reports, at least one structure was threatened.
A temporary evacuation point was opened at Mission Hills High School, located on Mission Hills Court in San Marcos, the San Diego Sheriff’s Office posted on X.
