Warnings will start going out to San Jose motorists on Monday who commit red light violations.
San Jose launched a new automated red light camera program to catch illegal light running and to address what it says is the second-highest cause of traffic deaths in the city.
At the beginning of October, the city designated four areas to received red light cameras: Monterey Road and Branham Lane going southbound, Leight and Parkmoor avenues going southbound, Keyes and South Third streets going westbound, and South Bascom and Camden avenues going north.
There will be a 60-day grace period before the program begins issuing citations for alleged red light violations, the city said — that means vehicles failing to stop at a red light or turning right without coming to a full stop. Citations will be delivered through the mail.
Warnings will begin on Monday and citations will start on Dec. 12.
After one year, the City Council will evaluate the program’s effectiveness, the city said.
