OAKLAND — An 18-year-old Vallejo man was shot in an altercation early Saturday morning in Oakland’s Uptown, authorities said.
He was in stable condition at a hospital and was being treated for a gunshot wound to his lower back, according to authorities.
The shooting happened around 2:21 a.m. Saturday in the 500 block of 17th Street.
According to initial police reports, there was a physical altercation involving the Vallejo man and another man, when a third male shot and wounded the victim in the lower back.
The shooters’ escape was aided by a fourth man, who punched an Oakland police officer trying to chase after the suspect, authorities said. That man was arrested for battery on a police officer, according to the report.
Some stray bullets also hit a neighboring apartment building, although no injuries were reported.
Brian, 28, said he and his partner were in bed at the neighboring apartment complex when they heard what sounded like fireworks coming from a parking lot party nearby. They quickly hid in a bathroom to get away from their windows, Brian said, and later found a stray bullet on their bed and a hole in their bedroom window.
Brian said he lives on the third-floor of the complex and bullets also struck a resident’s apartment on the fourth floor.
“It was the scariest thing we’ve ever had to go through in Oakland,” he said. “We’ve been in Uptown a few years now and nothing like that has ever happened.”
He said he and his partner plan to move out of their apartment complex following the incident.
“It’s not safe,” he said. If this bullet would’ve landed another way, it would’ve been a totally different story.”
