FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto held a news conference at police headquarters on Monday to announce the launch of a new violent crimes suppression operation in the city.
She said it’s in response to an increase in murders and shootings, as well as the multiple stabbings that took place at River Park and Fulton Street Hop last week.
She said she met Friday night with some of her command staff to come up with a plan to address not just the violence but also the fear created by the violence.
Police launch violent crimes suppression operation in Fresno
Over the Easter weekend, there was an increase in patrol units, tactical teams, Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium (MAGEC), motorcycle traffic officers, and other teams to address the fear that had been created in the community.
“Just with that quick action operation, we made 48 felony arrests, 53 misdemeanor arrests, we contacted 124 gang members in this city, and we recovered 15 crime guns,” said Casto.
Chief Casto also announced that all of the suspects are in custody from the two different stabbings at River Park and Fulton Street Hop last week.
The two River Park suspects were arrested on the night of the stabbings and then four suspects were arrested over the weekend for the downtown Fresno stabbing. They are 17 and 18 years old.
The chief said the operation that took place over the weekend will continue day and night.
