A Fresno chef and small business owner is recovering in the hospital after a sudden and unexpected health emergency.
Eddie, the owner of My Guy Market in downtown Fresno, has been hospitalized since Wednesday after experiencing heart failure.
At just 31 years old, he says the diagnosis came without warning.
“It just kind of happened out of the blue,” Eddie said. “I had some symptoms that had just been stacking up on me, it’s just a rare occasion.”
The medical emergency comes at what Eddie describes as both the best and most challenging time of his career.
Just days before being hospitalized, his popular chopped cheese sandwiches earned him the title of “Best Sandwich in Fresno.”
“I work hard for a lot of things, and My Guy Market really changed a lot of my life,” he said.
As a one-man operation, Eddie has had to temporarily close his shop while he recovers, adding financial strain to an already difficult situation.
Despite the setback, he remains optimistic and reflective about the demands of running a small business.
“I hope people understand and realize that it’s not for the weak-hearted,” he said. “I’m a prime example.”
Eddie says the experience has also served as a powerful reminder to prioritize his health.
“I had multiple people in my life that care about me dearly tell me to slow down, take it easy,” he said. “But, you know, I’m just a hard-headed kid.”
Doctors are still working to determine the cause of his heart failure and outline the next steps for treatment.
In the meantime, Eddie says those who want to support him and his business can do so by donating to his GoFundMe, which has been set up to help during his recovery.
He hopes to be discharged soon and return to serving his community this time with a renewed focus on balance and well-being.
