Grocery Outlet is opening its newest San Diego Store, at 1211 Garnet Ave. in Pacific Beach, on April 30.
The store, which has been in the works since at least mid-2024 and whose lease ends in 2035, will fill a roughly 12,000-square-foot space that once housed a Thrifty drugstore, and then a Trader Joe’s and most recently a gym.
The star feature of this location may be its roomy and revamped parking lot, which the company has been touting in social media posts.

“Yes, we have a parking lot behind the building!” and “The new parking lot looks fantastic,” the store’s social media accounts wrote.
The store is rewarding its first shoppers in several ways. Once the doors open at 8 a.m. on April 30, the store will host an “Xtreme Value treasure hunt.” The store is also giving its first 100 customers Grocery Outlet gift cards, and shoppers that day can also take home a free reusable bag while supplies last.
The company, headquartered in Emeryville, has almost 500 stores in California, and 10 other states. About 20 of its stores are in San Diego County.
“The majority of these stores are independently operated by locally based families,” its website says.
Last month Grocery Outlet announced it is closing 36 stores, including two in San Diego County, as part of a profit boosting restructuring plan. One is in El Cajon, at 350 N. 2nd Street, and the other is in Poway, at 13345 Poway Road.
Jason Potter, the company’s president and CEO, said in a news release that the company must keep working to refresh stores, improve the customer experience and deliver “clearer value.”
