FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The cause of the oil spill, which caused major disruptions to a Fresno section of Highway 99 on Thursday evening, was revealed by the CHP on Friday.

In a post on social media on Friday, officers wrote that the spill, which affected the southbound lanes of Highway 99 north of the Highway 180 exit, started when a big rig hauling 40,000 gallons of fish oil had to brake suddenly – shifting the load in the back of the big rig. That shift caused the liquid load to move, and it began leaking onto the freeway.

The leaking fish oil then seeped out of the back of the big rig’s trailer and onto Highway 99.

When Fresno Fire arrived at the scene, crews confirmed that the spill was not hazardous, and Caltrans then cleared the roadway.

CHP at the time estimated the spill to be between four and five miles long.
