(FOX40.COM) — Most “Night Court” arraignments at the Sacramento County Superior Court will come to an end later this month, ending a pretrial program that began during the COVID pandemic.
The court announced Tuesday it will discontinue downtown Night Court operations effective April 27.
The change comes as the court moves to its brand-new location at the Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Courthouse. Officials said eliminating Night Court “is intended to streamline court operations.”
Going forward, all first-time arraignments previously conducted through the Night Court program will be heard at 1:30 p.m. in Departments 4B, 5A, 61, 62 and 63. Those include misdemeanors, felonies and sepecialty court cases.
Additionally, the first-time arraignments will no longer be livestreamed.
A few program will not be affected by the changes, court officials said, including domestic violence arraignments. Those hearings will still be held in Department 60.
The regular Night Court operations held at the Carol Miller Justice Center on the second Wednesday each month will also continue.
According to the court, the evening arraignments were implemented in August 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
