The San Diego Humane Society rescued 40 cats from a studio apartment after the owner was no longer able to care for them.
According to the Humane Society, the elderly owner had been hospitalized and could no longer care for the cats.
The rescue operation began on August 6, when a community member reported multiple cats and a strong odor coming from a unit in the 1400 block of Imperial Avenue. The San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement worked with building management and the tenant’s family to gain entry and ensure the cats could be safely surrendered.
Due to the conditions and stress of the animals hiding, the organization said the rescue operation extended over several weeks. Fifteen cats were rescued on September 17, followed by 11 cats on September 24 and 14 cats on October 1.
