BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — The man accused of shooting and killing Jason Hall outside of an Oildale bar in March pleaded not guilty to murder on Tuesday, according to Kern County Superior Court records. He is due to return to court in less than two weeks.

Steven Quick was recently extradited to Kern County from Oregon after turning himself in to authorities.
Quick is accused of fatally shooting Jason Hall, 43, of Bakersfield, next to the Long Branch Saloon in Oildale on March 7, 2026. A warrant for Quick’s arrest was issued shortly after the incident, and he was apprehended in Oregon on March 10 before being extradited to Kern County.

Friends and family remembered Hall in a gathering at Standard Park on March 13.
Eyewitness News spoke to his loved ones. Tiffani Peterson, his cousin, said, “He was a fun, caring, easygoing, life of the party person.”
His friend, Amanda Harris, said, “He was a good guy; he never did wrong by people.” His coworker, Nathan Avley, described Hall as “easygoing, life of the party, had a great smile, great personality, very friendly.”

Friends and family shared food, stories, and memories while celebrating Hall’s life. Those close to him said his life wasn’t always easy, but in recent years, he worked hard to turn things around.
“He was a walking testimony. He showed people that no matter where you come from, you can turn your life around,” Peterson said. Avley echoed that message, saying, “Even though you make bad choices, you can turn your life around and accomplish your goals if you put your mind to it.”

The Long Branch Saloon released a statement on social media following the shooting, which said in part:
Our hearts are absolutely broken. Friday night we lost a truly loving, kind, and genuine friend, Jason, to senseless gun violence.Anyone who knew Jason knew the kind of person he was — someone who brought light into the room, made people laugh, and cared deeply about others. He will be deeply missed by so many of us.At The Longbranch, we do not tolerate violence of any kind. Our bar has always been about community, friendship, and people coming together — and we will continue to stand for that.
Quick is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 20.
