At least one sheriff’s deputy opened fire on an assault suspect early Wednesday in a rural neighborhood near Daley Ranch Park, killing him.
The shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. Wednesday outside a home in the 26000 block of North Broadway in unincorporated Escondido, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
The deadly gunfire erupted as deputies were investigating a reported stabbing, according to news accounts.
The suspect’s identity was withheld pending family notification.
The California Department of Justice will lead investigations in the case under terms of Assembly Bill 1506, a 2020 law that requires the agency to investigate law enforcement shootings resulting in the deaths of unarmed people in the state, according to sheriff’s officials.
Typically, the San Diego Police Department handles investigations into shootings involving the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Attorney General Rob Bonta announced. In this case, the California DOJ was taking over the investigation under AB 1506—a 2021 law that requires the state agency to investigate any shooting involving a police officer that results in the death of an unarmed citizen.
