Hundreds in San Francisco rallied against what was happening in the Middle East Wednesday. This comes following an already fragile two-week ceasefire deal between the U.S. and Iran.

Demonstrators called it an emergency rally and march, saying the U.S. has squandered so much money over this war while Americans struggle.

Chants echoed down Market Street as about 200 people marched with their signs, opposing the U.S. and Israel attacks in Iran, now in its sixth week.

“I think myself and as many Americans as possible need to resist and call out the illegality that is being perpetrated by Trump and his administration,” Jonathan Draper said.

“It’s up to the people of Iran, it’s not up to western governments to force regime changes,” Madrone Jack said.

This comes after a two-week ceasefire deal that averted President Trump’s threat on social media to unleash a bombing campaign that would destroy the Iranian civilization.

This was a deal these demonstrators, including some Iranians, don’t buy.

“It is unbelievable that they feel so comfortable doing whatever they want wherever they want,” Niman Mohaghegh, an Iranian American, said. “Right away, they should evacuate the whole region.”

Iran and Gulf Arab countries reported new strikes Wednesday. Israel’s military launched powerful attacks on an Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, killing hundreds and threatening the delicate ceasefire deal and raising questions about what was actually agreed to.

Israel and the U.S. said the deal does not include Lebanon, but Iran says it does, and shut down the Strait of Hormuz yet again, in retaliation.

“That is completely unacceptable. And again, this is a case of what they’re saying publicly is different privately,” White HoU.S.e Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

Now, the White HoU.S.e plans to send Vice President JD Vance to lead a U.S. delegation to Pakistan this weekend for in-person talks with Iran.

“If Iran wants to let this negotiation fall apart in a conflict where they were getting hammered over Lebanon, which has nothing to do with them, and which the United States never once said was part of the cease fire, that’s ultimately their choice. We think that would be dumb, but that’s their choice,” Vance said.

In the meantime, the choice for the demonstrators in San Franscisco was clear: to gather until the war ends.

“Despite what the heads of state are discU.S.sing between the U.S. and Iran, there’s still bombs falling,” Layla Degani, who is with the Party for Socialism and Liberation said.

The groups that organized the rally and march are also pU.S.hing for a general strike on May 1.
