Simonian and Yeager win Super Street at Bakersfield Doubleheader Weekend

Mark Simonian of Sanger, California, and Jordan Yeager of Hollister, California, emerged as the respective winners of the season-opening Southern California Super Street Association doubleheader weekend at Famoso Dragstrip. Simonian currently maintains a slight lead over Yeager in the points standings for the Able Wire EDM-sponsored eight-race series.

James Brown, a two-time NHRA Pacific Division champion, qualified number one for the Val Houmard Memorial race with a 10.902 in his ’90 Olds Cutlass and received the Mechanix Wear bonus award. The top four qualifiers also included Simonian (10.910), Gary Mignacca (10.915) and Kelly Giacalone (10.927).  

Peter Yoon opened the third round of racing with a double-breakout race against Mignacca, 10.891 to a 10.878, Giacalone drove her ’88 Mustang to the semifinals with a 10.912 win against Yeager, and Simonian got a bye.  In the semifinals, Simonian defeated Giacalone 10.912 to a 10.936, while Yoon put his ’93 Camaro into the final via a bye. Mark Simonian used a .008 light and 10.923, 143.49 with his Pontiac for the win as Yoon’s perfect reaction time and 11.009 was second best.  

Qualifying leaders for the second race of the weekend included Wes Anderson, (10.908), ’25 Rookie of the Year Scott Brown, (10.919), and Mike Boner and Ted Kellner, both with 10.924 times. Anderson earned the Mechanix Wear award.

Jordan Yeager, the ’25 Super Street Shootout champion, won the second race of the weekend, sponsored by Pizazz Racing. In the first round, Yeager defeated race #1 runner-up Peter Yoon, in round two he used a .012 light and perfect 10.900 to stop race #1 winner Mark Simonian.  Yeager won in the semifinals when Daniel had a mechanical issue at the starting line.  Dale Taros, a Super Street points contender for the past several seasons, went to the final with wins over Mike Boner, David Pohl, and top qualifier Wes Anderson before facing Yeager in the final.  Yeager used a .013 reaction time and 10.925, 133.65 for the win with his ’69 Camaro, while Taros settled for the runner-up finish with his ’72 Datsun Z at 10.917, 127.01 (.027 r.t.). 

After two races, Mark Simonian holds a 17-point lead over Jordan Yeager (1225 to 1208) going into the third and fourth race of the season, scheduled for May 16-17 at Famoso. Peter Yoon is third with 1015, Kelly Giacalone is fourth with 923, and Dale Taros is fifth with 921.
