LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) — A member of the Long Beach Garden Club is working to save monarch butterflies.
Holly Hahne has more than 100 caterpillars waiting to turn into butterflies. She started saving them after seeing someone stomping them to death at a local nursery.

Hahne said many people think they are an invasive species.
The International Union for Conservation and Nature lists monarch butterflies as endangered with a high risk of extinction.
“If you see them, you should go out and buy more plants, because we have to keep these species going,” Hahne said. “They are on the brink of extinction and on the endangered species list now, and it is important for us to take care of our living things.”

The World Wildlife Fund says the monarch butterfly population is at risk due to habitat loss, pesticides and climate change.
