LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Rain is expected to return to Southern California this weekend as two storm systems move into the region.

“The first system for late Friday into Saturday will have minimal impact as the upper low remains mostly over northern California,” according to the National Weather Service.

Rainfall amounts will range from a trace up to around a quarter inch, forecasters said.

The second system, expected late Saturday into Sunday, will be stronger and could bring heavy showers and possible severe storms, according to the NWS.

Forecasters said the stronger system could bring widespread rain across the region overnight Saturday into Sunday, with a greater than an 80% chance of precipitation and the possibility of thunderstorms, gusty winds and brief heavy downpours.

Rainfall totals of one-half to three-quarters of an inch are expected across coastal and valley areas, with inch-plus amounts possible in foothills, coastal slopes and areas impacted by thunderstorms.

The main front is expected to move through Los Angeles County between early morning and mid-morning Sunday, with lingering showers possible into Sunday night and early Monday before drier conditions return, according to the weather agency.

Snow levels are expected to fall to around 5,500 feet, with accumulating snow possible above 6,000 feet.

Temperatures will remain below normal through early next week before a warming trend begins by midweek, forecasters said.
