A person was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being shot Thursday afternoon in San Francisco’s Mission District, authorities said, hours after city leaders called for a ceasefire to curb rising violence.

Officers responded at approximately 3:08 p.m. to the 2200 block of Mission Street after receiving a report of a shooting, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

At the scene, officers located a victim and rendered aid before the person was transported to a hospital, police said. The victim’s condition was described as life-threatening. No additional details about the individual have been released.

Police asked the public to avoid the area as officers conducted their investigation. As of Thursday afternoon, authorities had not released information about a suspect or a possible motive.

The shooting occurred near the intersection of 18th and Mission streets, a busy commercial corridor typically crowded with pedestrians and transit riders.

Earlier Thursday, city officials and community groups gathered at City Hall to call for a 24-hour ceasefire aimed at reducing violence.

“We were at four homicides last year at this time; we are at 14 in San Francisco” so far this year, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said. “This is a crisis point.”

Citywide, most crime has continued to decline this year, even as killings have risen sharply.

The number of homicides so far this year compared to the same period in 2025 has jumped by 250%, from four to 14, according to San Francisco Police Department data.

At the same time, other major categories dropped significantly: robberies fell 33%, burglaries 33%, motor vehicle theft 35% and larceny theft 29%, while assaults declined about 10%.

Police data also shows 29 shooting incidents so far this year, compared with 26 at this point in 2025, with nine of this year’s homicides involving a firearm.

“One homicide is one too many,” Police Chief Derrick Lew said at the press conference. “One shooting is one too many.”

Authorities have not said whether any arrests have been made in the Mission District shooting. The investigation remains active.
