SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — San Francisco city leaders and community advocates on Friday called for a 24-hour ceasefire to curb gun violence, just hours after a shooting in the Mission District left one person with life-threatening injuries.
Police said officers responded to 18th and Mission streets around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, where the victim was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital. The shooting came shortly after officials announced the ceasefire effort, led by the youth nonprofit United Playaz.

“All San Franciscans deserve to feel safe in their neighborhood, on their block and in their home,” Mayor Daniel Lurie said at a Thursday press conference. He was joined by District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, the San Francisco police chief and the county sheriff.
“We were at four homicides at this time last year. We are at 14 in San Francisco. This is a crisis point,” Jenkins said. “It takes us as leaders, community members, elected officials, educators – you name it – to signal to youth and young adults that this is not the way.”

United Playaz Executive Director Rudy Corpuz said the goal is to expand the effort if it succeeds locally.
“If we’re successful in San Francisco, then maybe we could do Oakland, then we could do Richmond, and we could do Vallejo, and then we could do a 24-hour cease fire for the whole northern California,” he said.
Data from the San Francisco Police Department and the FBI show that between March 2025 and March 2026, there were 504 violent crimes per 100,000 people in the city, compared with 274 per 100,000 nationally. Violent crime in San Francisco decreased about 17% from 2024 to 2025.
Organizers said they hope the one-day ceasefire will inspire broader, long-term efforts to reduce violence across the Bay Area.
