Bears complete productive weekend on the East Coast with sweep over Yale.
No. 2 Bears Pick Up 3 Race Wins Against The Bulldogs
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 2 California men’s rowing team closed out a productive weekend of racing at the Princeton Invitational with a sweep of its Sunday morning races against No. 11 Yale on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, New Jersey.

The Golden Bears’ third varsity eight and second varsity eight each won their head-to-head races with the Bulldogs by a decent margin. In the 3V8+ race, Cal finished in 5:54.16 ahead of Yale in 6:06.17. The Bears’ 2V8+ widened the margin in the next race, completing the course in 5:48.34 to outdistance the Bulldogs, who finished in 6:02.81.

The V8+ race was a healthy competition, with the Bears’ margin of victory over the Bulldogs under three seconds. Cal reached the finish line in 5:43.24 while Yale crossed the line in 5:46.09.

Sunday’s meeting with Yale closed out a solid weekend of racing for the Bears, who faced some of the nation’s top programs at the early-season regatta. Cal tested itself against No. 5 Brown, No. 9 Syracuse and Yale under challenging conditions in the Saturday morning session and saw the V8+ and 3V8+ clinch wins, while the 2V8+ took second place. No. 4 Princeton was a formidable opponent in the afternoon session of Day 1, pushing the Bears to make improvements from their morning session. The Bears’ V8+ and 3V8+ notched wins in each of their races, while the 2V8+ fell to the Tigers by under four seconds.

Cal will look to build off its solid performances this weekend as it now approaches the second half of its season. The Bears will turn their focus to The Dual which will take place in two weeks’ time. Cal is set to host No. 1 Washington at its home course of Redwood Shores on April 25 for the rivalry race, with both programs vying for the coveted Schoch Cup.
