SANGER, Calif. (KFSN) — Families across the Valley are spending this weekend gathering materials to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos at the beginning of next month.
The centerpiece of the celebration, marigolds.
The vibrant flower is part of the cultural significance of honoring loved ones who have died, also known as the Day of the Dead, typically celebrated on November 1 through November 6.
The flower surrounding an ofrenda or altar in a family’s home serves as an essential part of the Dia De Los Muertos holiday, as well as Diwali, or the festival of lights.
The blooms are meant to symbolize brightness, blessings, and prosperity.
“They use them for ofrendas and during the Indian community, they use them for Diwali in celebration of the gods,” says Valley marigold farmer Rekha Guerrero.
The marigold season typically runs from late September through mid-November.
The family farm spans two acres off McCall and Belmont in Sanger.
When you arrive, you’ll see rows and rows of marigolds.
The family creates hand-woven marigold necklaces. Each piece is crafted with 20 freshly picked marigold flowers.
Marigold bundles start at $10.
