Reception for Eastside Scene Exhibit

Eastside Scene, a one-day exhibit, was held on Sunday, Oct. 26 and featured  photos shared by Eastsider readers.

Eastsider readers have shared countless photos over the years. A small fraction of those were on display on Sunday during a one-day exhibit—Eastside Scene—in Echo Park. The goal was to display photos that represented the many communities we cover.

Thanks to curator Robin Blackman, our host, Michael Glotzer of Hunt Vintage and, of course, to the many photographers whose work was on display. You will find their photos in the gallery below.

Let’s do it again soon!

East Los Angeles | 2012

The vendor was an oasis among the warehouse buildings. The colorful umbrella, the refreshing fruit on display, the patch of green grass behind the shady spot where they were situated, brought joy. The juxtaposition of the street sign “Bonnie Beach Place” made me laugh as it became a seashore scene from the street name and the umbrella. A classic moment in Los Angeles where you can make anything something other than reality

2022 Boyle Heights Sixth Street Bridge by Kevin Break

Boyle Heights | 2022

I went to see the grand opening and came back at night to see if it would light up!  Never imagined it wouldn’t be permanent!

2022 Elysian Valley Duck Crossing by Lisa R. White

Elysian Valley | 2022

I’m an avid cyclist and frequent the LA River Bike Path. I always enjoy seeing the ducks along the path, and on this particular day as they seemed to be having a gathering of sorts. I decided to take a picture.

2022 Lincoln Heights reflected lights by Kevin Break

Lincoln Heights | 2022

I was walking back from the LA river during the Hurriquake storm, and saw the lights reflecting off Broadway in Lincoln Heights.

2024 Echo Park Lake selfie by Sandy Driscoll

Echo Park | 2024

I took this photo on one of my many strolls around the Lake. To me, it exemplifies the beauty of the lake and its environs. The Lady of the Lake with DTLA in the background was providing a memorable selfie for this young couple and a memory for me and Eastsider readers.

Eagle Rock sunset and josey the dog by Keith Roberts

Eagle Rock | 2022

That is my dog Josey. who just passed away in July. I used to take her walking up on that ridge above the 134. We happened to get that amazing sunset that evening. I thought it would make a great photo with Downtown in the background behind my neighborhood of Eagle Rock.

Pizza Buona sign

Echo Park | 2015

Pizza Buona before it was forced to leave its long-time home at Sunset Boulevard and Alvarado street.

Boys in rain coats Silver Lake

Silver Lake | 2017

My then 3-year- old twins, Lukas and Felix, in their nicely matching raincoats. We had just had a playdate at my friend’s and I captured the boys running back to the car in the rain. For these two Los Angelenos, it was quite a novelty.  Nothing like some splashing in the puddles!

Later Skater spiral staircase by J. Vega

Near Elysian Park | 2023

My friend Bill & I met at the HLP Metro stop and walked from there down Fig to just South of Ave. 26 near the Home Depot to where the stairway access is behind the tow yard.  When I saw the circular stairs I thought they looked cool so I took the photo with my phone; I enjoy walking and taking pix and have done so all over NELA over the last bunch of years. I drive the 110 often and the paint/artwork in the photo is long-gone; it’s constantly being re-done and is kind of a “living, breathing” thing.

Fluff window sign Echo Park laundry

Echo Park | 2014

I have walked past this laundromat on Sunset Boulevard countless times. In the news business, the word “Fluff” is an insult. But I think it’s just inherently funny.

Uno Market Highland Park 2023

Highland Park | 2023

UNO Market on Figueroa on HP has the best array of paletas in tons of flavors. I drove by it on a rainy day and shot this photo because the colors popped out even more than usual that day.

2015 East LA Bike With Cart of Fruit Jose Aurelio Barrera 2015

East Los Angeles: Aurelio’s food donation by bicycle was simply an extension of his values and his humanity. His philosophy was that to fight social wrongs in “the world” means you are proactive in your immediate world. Curbing food waste by picking excess fruit from local backyards and respectfully acknowledging & feeding those experiencing homelessness on his neighborhood streets was part of that. His choice to use a bicycle before dawn was a way to make his interactions more intimate and also to get some exercise in before his family woke up and he could be back for coffee with his wife. We are all very lucky that his talent and decades of being an experienced photojournalist left us with great images like this one, documenting moments simply and succinctly. — Lorena Villegas

Piece of House of Spirits Sign

Echo Park | 2023

This photo of the House of Spirits sign actually taken in Glendale at the Neon Museum. I took it because I had always loved that sign when it graced Echo Park Ave. When I saw it at its new home in Glendale, I was thrilled to get close up photos of it.

Griffith Observatory in the fog

Griffith Park | 2024

I take photos every morning on my dawn walk in Griffith Park — this daily ritual lets me see the park in all its moods, noticing how light, mist, and colour shift from day to day. I’ve been hiking these trails across the park for over twenty years, and that morning, as I came down from Mt Hollywood, the Observatory was wrapped in fog. It stopped me in my tracks — one of those fleeting moments you just have to capture.

Riding Toy 2015 Mary Austin Klein

Echo Park | 2015

The photo is from Sunset Blvd in Echo Park in front of the old 99 cent discount store. It was a bit of still working nostalgia on display. An image of innocence and childhood joy, albeit grungy and kinda gross. Classic Echo Park.

Debs Park at Sunset by Tracy Adams

Debs Park | 2021

I remember it was just a beautiful night and I was with a friend who was showing me Deb’s park for the first time and I just tried to capture the beauty that was Deb’s park that night.

Horses in Elysian Park

Elysian Park | 2021

I was brushing him [BeauDune (left) and HalfMoon (right)] when this was taken — not doing a task, but keeping a promise. To be steady. To be kind. To be here. This is what love looks like in real time.

LA Hearts for Horses is a nonprofit organization devoted to equinectivity—the connection and well-being of horses and the humans who walk beside them. We believe horses are not possessions, but beings we are fortunate to be in the presence of. Our mission is to honor their grace, provide true, consistent, compassionate care, and expand exposure so more people can experience connection through love, respect, and service.

Silver Lake Reservoir reflections

Silver Lake | 2021

It was early morning, probably about 6:30-7:00am and I was walking our little dog Aster so she could take care of her morning routine and I would get some exercise and steps.

As we were returning we walked across the Silver Lake reservoir dam and I was immediately struck by the beauty of the morning. Sunlight was filtered through the morning clouds. The mist from the cool night was still hanging in the air and created one dimensional visual layers of the hills and mountains beyond. All of this was beautifully reflected in the still water of the reservoir.

Moments like these remind me of why we’re so lucky to live in these magical environments of Southern California and these communities.

Angeleno Heights home at night

Angeleno Heights | 2019

I love Echo Park and the atmosphere it exudes, something appealing yet elusive.  Like many photographers I look for light.  As the day wanes the light plays across our hilly neighbourhood to great effect.  As I walked on Kensington Road I was thinking about the many lives lived in this ridge line house and as the day light fades and the illuminations rise we capture a passing between worlds in a timeless vision.

Dodger Stadium aerial

I was in a helicopter for work taking photos of the sites of future projects, and I knew you’d need a Dodger Stadium photo, so I took a bunch as we passed by. That’s the reason I took the shot, for the Eastsider LA!
