A Pontiac man was fatally shot Saturday during an apparent robbery, and the alleged killer — a 36-year-old felon on probation — was arrested approximately three hours later, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said.

The victim, identified as Kevonte Javon Smith, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

Smith and his alleged killer knew each other, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies dispatched to the 100 block of Crystal Lake Drive in Pontiac at around 2:15 p.m. Saturday on a report of a shooting found Smith lying on the driveway with a gunshot wound to the back, the sheriff’s office said.

Witnesses told detectives that the suspected shooter fled on foot after the shooting. A K9 unit and drones searched the area, and detectives recovered the weapon used in the shooting and the clothing worn by the suspect at the time, the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s Directed Patrol Unit arrested him at a location on Spokane Drive in Pontiac, officials said.

The suspect was on probation for a drug conviction at the time of the shooting, and had served prison time for an unarmed robbery conviction in 2016.

Detectives are expected to present the case to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office this week for consideration of charges.

“It is so sad to see when lives are lost for absolutely no reason,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard stated in a news release. “We look forward to this individual being held to account for the suspected violent homicide. I am proud of our team that within three hours we were able to identify, locate, take into custody a suspect and recover the suspected murder weapon and clothing. A full team effort.”
