Officials said the homeowner was inside when the fire started. After hearing a noise from the garage, he went to check and found the converted living area on fire.
He then went back inside, helped his mother out of the home, and they were safely evacuated before he called 911.
The homeowner suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
