Equipment problem, disabled BART train causes rush-hour delays

A track equipment problem in downtown Oakland caused systemwide delays to BART service during the Tuesday evening rush-hour commute. 

At around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, the transit agency said an equipment problem between 19th Street and MacArthur stations had created a “major delay” on the San Francisco Line in the Millbrae and Daly City directions. 

BART spokesperson Chris Filippi said around 5:45 p.m. that a disabled train at West Oakland Station was snarling the system further, limiting the flow of trains through the Transbay Tube. The agency did not estimate the average length of delays. 

BART service had previously been delayed by about 20 minutes at around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, due to track equipment problems between the same Oakland stations. 

The transit agency advised riders to instead take bus or Muni service, which was available between Embarcadero and Balboa Park stations.
