Homicide detectives in Long Beach are investigating the fatal shooting of a man over the weekend.

In a news release, officials with the Long Beach Police Department said the deadly April 11 encounter happened in the 660 block of Cherry Avenue, near the intersection of East Artesia Boulevard, around 8:45 p.m.

Responding officers found a victim, described only as an adult male, suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body.

“Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the victim to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries,” officials said.

The person or people involved in the shooting fled the area before police arrived. So far, it remains unclear whether investigators have located any witnesses or surveillance footage that captured what unfolded.

The motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

Authorities are withholding the victim’s identity pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
