(KRON) — A San Jose man was arrested over the weekend in connection to what the San Jose Police Department is characterizing as a series of unprovoked assaults. Davit Martinez, 32, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

The first of the incidents allegedly involving Martinez occurred on Feb. 23 at 2:20 p.m. SJPD officers responded to a gym in the 2300 block of McKee Road for a report of assault with a deadly weapon. The elderly male victim, according to police, was exercising when the suspect approached him without provocation, punched him in the face, pulled him to the ground and continued striking him.

The unconscious victim was taken to the hospital.

Then on March 8, at around 6:50 p.m., officers responded to a supermarket parking lot in the 2300 block of McKee Road on a report of felony battery. The victim, also an elderly male, was walking through the parking lot when the suspect approached and punched him, causing him to fall. Police cited witnesses who said the suspect kept striking the victim before taking off.

The victim was taken to the hospital and required stitches for his injuries.

A third incident occurred the following day at around 11:31 a.m. Officers responded to a medical facility in the 1900 block of Monterey Road on a report of assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect, who was a patient at the facility, punched a man in the head, knocking him out. The suspect fled and was later identified.

The SJPD Assaults Unit conducted a comprehensive investigation, determining all three incidents were connected to the same suspect — Martinez. Detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest and began actively searching for him.

On Sunday, April 12, at around 12:55 p.m., the suspect was involved in a dispute at a residence in the 600 block of Gittle Court. According to police, he assaulted a family member and brandished a machete. Officers responded and the suspect barricaded himself inside the residence.

Martinez was taken into custody and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail. Police say that based on the “pattern of unprovoked acts of violence,” there may be additional victims who have not yet been identified.

SJPD urges anyone who may have been a victim to come forward.
